activated carbon

Carefully selected raw materials are carbonised at around 250 °C to remove moisture and volatile components. Activation then takes place at 900 – 1000 °C under controlled addition of steam. This process creates a highly porous material with an enormous internal surface area. Under the scanning electron microscope, it reveals a sponge-like structure with pores down to molecular dimensions.

This multitude of tiny pores within a small volume gives activated carbon its exceptional adsorption capacity: a single teaspoon contains a surface area equivalent to a football field – between 800 and 1600 m² per gram.

Niederer Schneider AG supplies activated carbons from Jacobi Carbons, one of the world’s leading manufacturers. These high-quality products are used in air and water purification, industrial processes, and environmental protection – wherever maximum purity is required.
