upwater AG
About us
Upwater, a spin-off of the ETH Water Research Institute (Eawag), offers two innovative measurement methods for wastewater treatment plants.
The "Notos" measurement system enables high-resolution
determination of greenhouse gases in the exhaust air from wastewater treatment tanks. The data can be used to optimize processes or create a carbon footprint. This system is currently in use at eight wastewater treatment plants in Switzerland and three in Europe, with additional plants under construction.
In addition to greenhouse gas measurement, upwater also offers monitoring of the wastewater treatment tank microbiome. The composition of microorganisms in the sewage sludge is regularly determined in the laboratory using DNA sequencing. This approach enables a better understanding of biological processes and helps identify and resolve problems at an early stage.
The application of these two technologies not only contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions produced in the form of nitrous oxide during biological processes, but also enables a better understanding of the treatment processes. This helps meet increasing demands for water quality.

Microbiome Monitoring
Our microbiome monitoring service offers modern diagnostics for sewage treatment plants. DNA analysis technology allows us to delve deep into biological processes and map bacterial composition in high resolution. Instead of simply measuring what microorganisms do (cleaning performance at the outlet), we now identify which bacteria are actually present and what functions they can perform. This enables the early detection of disruptive organisms and critical changes in biology, long before massive operational problems manifest themselves. This precise monitoring leads to a sound understanding of the biology of your own plant and specifically prevents stress situations, efficiency losses and protracted instabilities – for safe and forward-looking sewage treatment plant operation.
